Regarding the teachers and education - There is something to be said about unions having a negative impact on education. However there are many dedicated education professionals that do an outstanding job. The one good thing about the unions for teachers is that it brought the pay for the profession up significantly. As the importance of education cant be stressed enough, I have always thought that teachers should be highly paid, but also with high dedication and results.

The missing point in the education discussion though is the role of the parents. I wonder if we in the western world are not too lax with the kids. I live in a multicultural environment and the kids from India and Asia regularly outperform their western peers. The reason is those kids take the studying and education process very seriously and are pushed hard by their parents. The western kids are just like those in the states - some work hard, but many do not and are more into the social side of school.

Regards

Neil
