I have a third OS start up option now.

(1) Windows XP.
(2) Windows 2000 professional.
(3) Linux Ubuntu 9.10

and am typing this msg in Ubuntu.

I have had to recover the windows environment a couple of times now, mainly because I was experimenting with Linux Ubuntu. A couple of things ref image recovery of Windows using a separate partition for documents and user profiles (application settings).
(a) Don't make the documents or user profile folders private during image back up processing.
(b) Restart the OS on recovery by going into safe mode and using the administrator sign on (on the windows OS partition). In that user account the partitions can be labelled to suit the way the registry is configured. It all reconfigures during the restart.

Ubantu looks good, lots of learning to do.
