General Lee lost the civil war at Gettysburg by making terrible military decisions, like Picketts charge and forcing Hood to attack uphill instead of going around; and not heeding Longstreets pleas to withdraw to a defensible position. History is replete with bad military decisions. Interestingly I recently heard somewhere that smart armies usually defeat dumb armies even ones with ten times the numbers. In 9 AD the Germans slaughtered 20,000 Romans in the tutoburg forest on the Rhine river. The slaughter/defeat was so overwhelming Rome never crossed the Rhine again and the Germanic tribes were left to themselves. The great German general Arminius set the perfect trap for the Romans. PS: the kids in Iran like America and make up 70% of the population and are trying to overthrow the clerics. But if we, or Israel, bomb their nuclear faciliteis, we will alienate the kids and progressives just as they are fighting in the streets for democracy.
