SUGAR LAND, Texas—Two people have been charged in a shooting at First Colony Mall in Sugar Land.
It happened inside the Dillard’s department store on Dec. 31.
Demarkus McCants, 21, and Edward Reed, 18, have been charged with aggravated assault.
According to investigators, McCants and Reed were in the store when they got into a fight with another group of men.
During the fight, investigators said Reed shot a man in the side and dropped the weapon.
Police believe McCants then picked up the gun and attempted to fire another shot, but the gun misfired.
The victim was taken to Memorial Hermann in the Med Center. He has since recovered from his injuries, police said.
Sugar Land investigators said the fight started because the men were staring at each other.
They don’t believe the incident was gang-related.
McCants is being held on $75,000 bond for aggravated assault and $20,000 for a previous burglary in another jurisdiction.
Reed’s bond was set at $25,000.
