RE: NCs and cost of ownership

I've seen a wide range of numbers being tossed around and some of them certainly appear to be inflated, but I would argue that significant savings(overall ownership costs not just initial purchase) can be had by a business going with a thin client architecture. Just how much of a savings is subject to debate.

"The biggest argument against the NC, and in my mind the most relevant, is that it provides nothing new - just a different way of doing something PCs today already do - connect to the internet.

To some extent I would agree with this. Distributed processing is an old idea. In my mind, the real significant difference that the NC provides is that it is a more cost effective way of accessing Windows apps (along with Unix, MVS, OS/2,AIX etc). The internet angle has been way over hyped. In the near term while the Java application base is being built up, it is the NCs ability to act as a cost effective universal information access device that will be its strongest selling point.

IBM's NC is a result of a joint development with NCD. The NC announced the other day bears a strong resemblance to NCD's NC called the Explora. This is probably because they took the Explora, tweaked the HW a bit, added some firmware changes and slapped on some new packaging. The reason I mention the Explora is that Intel uses some of these boxes for remote access for their employees:

Why would the mother of all PC companies be using an Explora NC?

(Please note the mention of WinCenterPro in the linked message.)
