It lacks substance only to those who focus only on fighting wars for oil to create more terrorists and finance them with US oil money. The story is incredibly simple minded and overly done for both the antagonist and protagonist. As if the military is only about conquest and the aliens are totally about peace - come on this is a really simple minded fantasy story with stunningly beautiful worlds and creatures. So many cliques it's worse than a disney animation. For those of us American patriots who want oil independence and want a cleaner environment, it had a lot of meaning. Yes - keep looking for the "unobtainium" - someday you'll find it. :-)
