Roger & Z,
If QNTM abandoned the high end, they would be saying that they are phasing out the hard drive business altogether. That is where the whole business is going. Is anyone even making <1gig drives anymore? How long will they even be made?

Any company that wants to survive must be able to successfully compete in what we now call the "high end". When voice recognition and 3D come along, storage requirements will soar, not to mention video. A 1 gig drive will seem like the 100 mb drives do now--nowhere, nothing, insignificant.

RE: Maxtor. I read somewhere that Hyundai may be dressing up Maxtor for an IPO sometime in the next year or two. May be the same 1 year wonder that it was a few years ago. Hitting one or even two generations of drives can't cut it for a viable company. You can be successful for a while, but in the ripeness of time, you lose, and lose big.

In case I haven't said it before, this is a brutally difficult business.
