Motorola to debut AT&T smartphone

Jan. 06, 2010 -- (Crain’s) -- AT&T Corp. says it will launch Google-powered smartphones from Motorola Inc. and Dell Inc. this year.

The move is crucial to Motorola's comeback strategy as it looks to regain marketshare by gaining a foothold in the smartphone space that dominates the cell phone segment.

Motorola largely missed that shift to smartphones, which was led by AT&T and Apple Inc.'s hot-selling iPhone. It launched its first smartphones in November with Verizon Wireless and T-Mobile.

The endorsement by AT&T is seen as critical to Motorola co-CEO Sanjay Jha's effort to prove that his turnaround of Motorola's cell phone business is for real. The Schaumburg-based telecommunications company has said it expects to launch 25 new phones this year as it tries to regain the marketshare it has lost since the Razr peaked and then faded three years ago.

AT&T offered few details of the launch but said the new phone from Motorola would include Motoblur, a customized software that allows users to integrate social media applications such as Facebook and Twitter with e-mail and contact lists.

The software, which has won praise from users and analysts, was missing from the Motorola phone that Verizon launched late last year under its Droid nameplate.

Analysts expect Verizon to announce this week another Motorola phone with Motoblur at the Consumer Electronics Show, which begins Thursday in Las Vegas.

AT&T also said Wednesday that it plans to offer a phone from Texas-based Dell, the latest computer company to jump into the phone business, along with Apple.

Dell's phone business is run from Buffalo Grove and led by former Motorola executive John Thode. The company also is using Google's Android software platform. Its first phones were launched late last year in China and Brazil, but the company had not yet entered the crucial U.S. market.

Motorola stock closed at $7.97, up 11 cents on the day.
