When I revisit with my high school classmates in central Texas, I'm beginning to pick up on these kinds of vibes. As a student of the Civil War, I find this fascinating and appalling at the same time. Certainly some significant differences, but too many similarities to dismiss out of hand. Biggest difference, to my mind, is that this time the federal gov't would enter any hostilities with the clear upper hand, as opposed to playing second fiddle to the states, not to mention the precedent that has now been established. I wasn't aware that Josh Marshall is thinking along the same lines. Benen has replaced TPM as my go-to site, and so sometimes I don't get far enough with my daily reading to include both.
