"Not that being out of step is necessarily a bad thing always, but in this case it is a bad thing because the GOP is wrong."
You have to realize that they are very insecure. It is like the Scifi series "Battlestar Galactica". Probably some of the best TV ever done, but the wingnuts hated it. Why? Because they took affront at one of the arcs where the Cylons occupied New Caprica and the Colonials engaged in an underground resistance. They called foul, that it was obviously a metaphor about Iraq with the evil Cylons being the Americans. But, to anyone who didn't have the hair trigger response, it looked a lot more like Vichy France. Which Ronald D. Moore(RDM) confirmed.
Now, RDM is very definitely a liberal. But he is far from being anti-military, unlike wingnut spin. He was a military brat, and respect the military, and it shows. He took as his inspiration both the submarine service and carriers. He, in fact, had his core writers visit active duty vessels of both types to get a feel for how things worked. And it shows. If you are somewhat objective, you quickly realize that the military side is almost idealized. They may be wrong, but they are wrong for the right reasons. The political side, not so much. The goal of everyone is the same, survival. But the compromises are strictly political. |
