I don't see civil war as worth worrying about; rather the level of animosity between parties growing and the possibility that this sectionalizes.

I don't recall the source, but before the serious fighting began in 1861, thousands of men crossed the line in either direction to join the side of their choosing.

But I think that is also one of the more serious differences now: The teabagger movement is much more widespread and less tied to a geographic area.
