I've always felt it was a stupid con to build a dozen different brands that were all essentially the same under the sheet metal. But it worked for GM for a pretty long time, for Ford/Mercury and Dodge/Chrysler. Your Buick, Oldsmobile and Cadillacs all cost more than the Chevys, but were really pretty much just the same, except for the sheet metal and included gadgets.

It let the dumbass Buick buyer feel superior to the Chevy owner, and the Cadillac man look down at them both. Toyota plays the game with Lexus, and Nissan with Infinity, Honda with Acura.

For me, a car has always been an A-B tool, not a personal statement.
