Mindmeld, let me make it clearer to you. From your original post:

Message 26222313

> There were 225 pediatric flu deaths. Of those, 183, or 81% were H1N1, the rest were seasonal or a different sub-type.

> There were 79,995 cases of flu reported. Of those, 60,403 were H1N1 cases. So 183/60,403 = 0.30% H1N1 death rate. For the other flu cases, there were 19,592. So 42/19,592 = 0.2% death rate.

> As you can see, the H1N1 death rate is 41.3% higher.

Flaw #1: You divided the number of pediatric H1N1 deaths with the overall H1N1 flu cases and called that the "H1N1 death rate." Those numbers do not correlate.

Flaw #2: The percentage of H1N1 cases vs. non-H1N1 flu cases is higher in children than in the overall population. Those will lead to a wide difference in results from the way you did your "math."

Flaw #3: You provide no numbers on the number of overall flu deaths due to H1N1 vs. non-H1N1. The H1N1 death rate in adults could be much lower than that of children. Instead, you took the death rate of H1N1 in children vs. non-H1N1 deaths and assumed its the same for adults. There is no data to confirm this.

Those flaws can already been seen in your fuzzy math alone. I can also infer from your other inconsistencies (such as you changing the story from "three times" to "41% more) that you don't know WTF you are talking about.

And you do this for a living? Scary ...
