The problem with Perot wasn't that he was running in a third party. The problem was that he was running as a dictator, who would single handedly go to DC and clean up the mess. That's what the people who voted for him wanted. The rest of the country wasn't ready for that - yet.

The proper application of a third party is to veto the Republican party every time they make a mistake and nominate a democrat. Until they get the message.
