Kingston Expands Award-Winning Processor Upgrade Product Line With TurboChip(R) 200

New Kingston Upgrade Powers Up Pentium(R) Systems by 250 Percent Using AMD-
K6(TM) MMX(TM) Enhanced Processor

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., Nov. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Kingston Technology today announced the release of TurboChip(R) 200, a 200MHz MMX(TM) enhanced processor upgrade for Pentium(R) 75 MHz and up desktop or minitower computers, increasing processing performance up to 250 percent of the original system.
The new TurboChip 200 is designed with the AMD-K6(TM) MMX(TM) Enhanced Processor that combines the power of a high-performance sixth-generation processor with the ability to execute the industry standard MMX instructions.
In effect, TurboChip 200 equips older Pentium systems with the necessary tools for today's sophisticated operating systems and software applications.
TurboChip 200 is an upgrade that seeks to serve two primary audiences within the Pentium market. "Because TurboChip 200 utilizes the industry standard MMX software, users can run today's popular media-intensive applications such as graphics, video and audio at dramatically increased performance levels," said Gary MacDonald, vice president of marketing and sales, Kingston. "TurboChip 200 is also an ideal upgrade for corporate IT managers seeking a cost-effective migration solution to run sophisticated software applications and operating systems that demand superior processing power and multi-tasking capabilities, such as Windows(R) 95 or NT(TM),"
furthered MacDonald.
The innovative, advanced AMD-K6(TM) microprocessor is manufactured with AMD's sixth-generation 0.35-micron, five-layer-metal silicon process technology. The AMD-K6(TM) features the industry-leading 64KB of level-1 cache along with six-issue RISC86(R) superscalar microarchitecture -- superior in design to Pentium(R) II -- which increases the performance of the TurboChip 200 device's core.
"AMD's ability to deliver the best performance for the price in a
microprocessor and Kingston's expertise in integrated circuit-board design and manufacturing result in a solution that is vital for corporate technology migration," said David Sheffler, AMD's vice president of channel sales and marketing. "Additionally, because the TurboChip 200 is affordably priced, it has great appeal to home computing consumers -- a market very important to AMD."
"The new TurboChip 200 upgrade can extend the life of early generation, Pentium systems to be retrofitted easily and inexpensively so that they can immediately correspond to current and future developments in technology," added Raymond Wang, product manager, PC Enhancements, Kingston.
A chip-for-chip replacement upgrade providing Pentium 200MHz-plus
processing performance, TurboChip 200 is compatible for systems with either Socket 5 or Socket 7 CPU pin layouts. turboChip 200 carries a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $299. Shipping November 1, 1997, TurboChip 200 is backed by Kingston's industry-leading lifetime warranty, plus free technical support.
A comparative example of TurboChip 200 performance, reviewed alongside the Intel(R) 200 MHz OverDrive, has been measured by SYSmark32 for Windows NT, a processing power benchmark utility. The following chart shows that TurboChip 200 increased the original 75MHz system performance by 145% and out-performed the Intel OverDrive 200MHz with MMX technology upgrade.

*SYSmark32 for Windows NT Scores

TurboChip 200 158
Intel OverDrive 200MHz 153
Original 75MHz 109
*Test results may vary depending on system make, model and configuration.

"With Turbo-Chip 200 , Kingston continues its tradition of offering intelligent solutions for computer users to keep up with the rapid developments in technology," said Wang. According to IDC industry reports, more than 100 million Pentium desktop systems have been shipped within the last three years. "TurboChip 200 can more than double the performance of these systems and dramatically increase productivity for this large installed base of users," continued Wang.
In March of 1996, Kingston introduced TurboChip 133 upgrade for 486 systems, providing a performance boost for over 250,000 corporate customers.
TurboChip 133 received favorable reviews from many top industry experts, including Computer Reseller news and Federal Computer Week.
