Insurance is already regulated to the hilt by the states. The current bills are really playing around the edges of the system, going nowhere near the heart of the system.

Precisely. Few people realise how deeply our present system is molded by government demands and regulations. Private insurers are run mostly by the states; Medicare is the overall overlord run by Washington... everyone working in the system is jumping through the hoops in order to get paid.

I think the original idea of the reform was to go more or less fully socialized. This didn't work out. Gradually, it drifted into becoming a fight to pass ANYTHING... in order to avoid looking like a political failure.
