3Dfx Interactive and Diamond Multimedia Build a Better Monster SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 3, 1997--
Award-Winning Family of Diamond Monster 3DAccelerators to Be
Expanded With 3Dfx's New Voodoo 2 Graphics Chipset
Today 3Dfx Interactive (NASDAQ:TDFX) and Diamond Multimedia Systems Inc. (NASDAQ:DIMD) announced plans for the expansion of Diamond's award-winning Monster 3D brand with a new Monster 3D gaming accelerator based on 3Dfx's next generation Voodoo 2 Graphics chipset.
''Diamond Multimedia has been instrumental in the success of the original Voodoo Graphics chipset,'' said Greg Ballard, president and CEO, 3Dfx Interactive. ''Voodoo 2 will thrill existing Voodoo owners and blow away those that have yet to experience 3Dfx's technology. With our newest chipset inside, we believe the Monster line will continue its successful course.''
The Voodoo 2 chipset delivers an incredible 3 million triangles per second and 90 million dual-textured, bilinear-filtered, per-pixel MIP-mapped, alpha-blended, Z-buffered pixels per second, over three times the performance of the current Voodoo Graphics chipset. Serious gamers will also be able to link two cards together to boost fill rate performance again by a factor of two.
''The consumer response to the original Monster 3D was even greater than we anticipated,'' said Scott Vouri, general manager of the Core Graphics Business Unit of Diamond Multimedia. ''The Monster brand, which has come to be associated with high-quality multimedia subsystems, was established with the first 3Dfx chipset. We expect the new Diamond Monster 3D to build on this reputation and to boost it even further.''
Diamond Multimedia will announce the product name, configuration, pricing and software bundle for the new Monster 3D accelerator at a later date. In comparison to the first-generation Monster 3D, Diamond expects the new Monster 3D accelerator to deliver superior performance and to carry a higher price. Product availability is planned for mid-to-late first quarter of 1998.
A full range of unique visual special effects are built into the Voodoo 2 chipset. Eye-catching techniques such as transparency, alpha-blending, full speed bi- and tri-linear filtering, per-pixel and per-vertex atmospheric fog and haze, polygon edge anti-aliasing, texture compositing, perspective correct 3D texture mapping and true per-pixel level-of-detail MIP mapping will make Voodoo 2 the most advanced 3D accelerator available to the average consumer.
