SF then was mostly wood - fire was a main part of the destruction of the city. now it is concrete that is a main killer in Haiti, and that makes streets impassable. and I wouldn't worry about our very well-armed military being sitting ducks for anyone. nor for there being great unrest in a city where people walk through the streets singing and praying. The barbary coast in SF was a wild and wonderful place. but, yes, then the landfill and some gleaming shiny city was built up from the ashes of the earthquake. what's that neighborhood... down near the water... rich people live there... it escapes me right now... there was quite the fire going there in '89, as well. near fisherman's wrarf. and a segmant of the bay bridge fell in. and an overpass in Oakland. and the embarcadero was ruined. it was rather a mess.
