Wow. That was a very sensible post. Looks like we are both closer in our opinions on some issues than either of us want to believe. I too have a deep belief that we can do more to help Americans less fortunate and thus find myself drawn to social programs aimed at that. But it is true that when you vote Dem you typically get ambitious and expensive programs on the docket.

I used to not vote Dem for that very reason...I was afraid of their fiscal profligacy. However, after the 2001-2008, I woke up and realized that we no longer have a choice between fiscal conservatives and fiscal profligates. Instead, the real choice is where do you want the money to be spent? Both parties are going to spend like there is no tomorrow. So do you want your money spent on the military, war, oil, and Iraqis or do you want your money spent on worthwhile nation building for Americans? If it's going to be spent by both parties, then I'll choose the party that believes in spending on Americans and that is the Democratic Party.
