Don't forget about Energy Input required to achieve Energy Output. When that ratio approaches 1.0 there will be no additional oil extracted for the obvious reason that if you expend as much energy as you can recover there is zero gain for the energy and work involved. A lot of oil in the ground will never be extracted.

The oil business has made major strides in improving extraction techniques but you can only go so far. I think we are closer to a problem than our "leaders" are willing to say.
