I agree with Bob, Edward, but will add another point.

Oil's appeal is as a transportation fuel, as we know.
It is energy dense, stable and easily moved around.

If the energy to produce transportation fuel from crude is 1:1, it is still a cost effective method of moving us around this planet.

Your point is well taken, but I think that your threshold number is a bit higher than 1:1.
