Obama in Massachusetts Means Obamacare Is in Critical Condition [Kathryn Jean Lopez]

How bad a sign is it that the president had to go there? It "shows that the president's stature and his central agenda item — health care — are at risk in this election. A sign that not even the bluest of blue states may not even follow the lead of the White House," Democrat Doug Schoen, author of The Political Fix, tells "The Corner."

"Democratic defections plus Independents hemorrhaging are key reasons Brown could win," Schoen says.

So if Brown wins, what does it mean for health care ? A Senate source walks through possible but probably implausible scenarios: "They could try and jam it before he's sworn in, but people would storm the Capitol. They could ask the House to pass the Senate version, but that's also unrealistic — people on both sides of the abortion debate would be against it; the unions' sweetheart deal isn't in there. And they could try reconciliation, but remember, that would require them to go back through committees with a new bill, and under that process, a lot of the goodies that entice votes would be dropped."

The bottom line on why these are all unlikely: "If a Republican, running against the Dem health-care bill wins in Massachusetts, a Republican can win anywhere. And Dems are going to be soiling their britches."

A Brown win would be no small thing for the Democrats. Which is why Bill Clinton was not in Haiti on Friday and the president had to give it a try yesterday.
