My sense of it is that the oil price that needs to be increased is that for consumers at the pump - not industries involved in a competitive world. The price rise should be done over an extended period of time so that the populace can make car investment decisions based on known future fuel cost minimums (any tax or mandate would only set a floor). If nothing else, a Persian Gulf defense fee should be laid on gasoline.

Government policies should not pick alternate winners. Government policies should not place "political rhetoric" barriers in the way of domestic development. The first politician who tries to scare the populace re off shore drilling or killing the polar bears should be arrested and charged with treason.

We have a populace that has demonstrated a willingness to believe rhetoric that removes responsibility from themselves. Until we are willing to move beyond the politics of energy fear mongering - hey - we will have the mess we deserve.
