A lot of attention has been given to hybrid vehicles for their fuel economy but a much older technology provides comparable fuel economy (at least on the highway): Diesel engine cars.

Back in the 1970s when diesel engine cars made their appearance in the USA in response to the oil shortages, diesel engine cars had the disadvantages of being loud and emitting a lot of soot from their exhaust. Also, finding gas stations that actually sold diesel fuel was difficult since not many did (to give an idea how few gas stations sold diesel fuel, Mercedes gave its owners of diesel cars at the time a handbook that listed all the gas stations in North America that sold diesel fuel).

Today, however, diesel engines have been much improved and don't suffer the same drawbacks they used to. Also, diesel fuel is sold at most gas stations.

It should be noted that hybrid vehicles make extensive use of what are called "rare earth" metals, most of which come from China. Large production of hybrids will put significant pressure on these metals. So, buying a diesel engine car is more "green" than people think. Although diesel fuel tends to be more expensive than regular gasoline (remember those trucker protests in the summer of 2008?), diesel engine cars are a compelling alternative to hybrids.

The US EPA and Dept. of Energy have compiled information on diesel cars at fueleconomy.gov
