Jack, the 'Double Tax' Issue Helped Get Scott Brown Elected [Michael Graham] Gov. Deval Patrick, who promised to cut property taxes instead passed a 25 percent tax hike to squeeze another $1 billion out of taxpayers. But there was a twist — or at least a garnish: He extended the sales tax to the retail price of beer, wine, and liquor. Given that about 40 percent of that price is state and federal excise taxes, 40 cents of every dollar in these taxes is a sales tax on a liquor tax. This is just one of the many ham-fisted actions of Massachusetts government that inspired voters to support Scott Brown. That same governor, who's overseen a slumping economy while adding government jobs, is scheduled to face the same voters who elected Scott Brown this November. Prediction: It won't be pretty.
