How much will never be paid back?

There is no way to be specific at this point, but obviously its quite a large sum. AIG, to name just one company, won't be paying the money back any time soon, if ever.

Another example -
"The regulator of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac said it was unlikely that the federal government would ever be paid back the entire $85 billion spent so far on bailing out the firms -- and added that the cost was going to rise as additional funds are drawn."

Other companies will pay back the money only in part, or after a long enough period of time that the time discounted value of the payback will be significantly less than the bailout or loan.
