I have another story for you. Had new carpeting put in my classroom. Tried to blow out the smell- it was AMAZING. It was a few days before classes were to start, and I'd get a headache just from walking in the room. I sent emails to the janitors and to the VP at our school who was in charge of facilities. Nothing. More emails- desperate emails. Nothing. I emailed the union. They had someone out to test the air the same day, AND my classroom was cleaned and aired out in time for school. I think I would have been locked in a reeking, and probably dangerously polluted, classroom, with 4 classes of kids for a long time without my union. I don't always agree with the union, but as a safety backstop, and as a way to combat unfair and sometimes insane administrators, there's nothing like a union.
