Microsoft's DNA may breed NT delays

Microsoft's intention to provide a complex component software framework in Windows NT 5.0 has many observers worried that the arrival of the next-generation NOS will slip past its 1998 due date.

Industry analysts say that Microsoft's goal of delivering software components securely over intranets or the Internet--a project called Distributed interNet Applications Architecture (DNA)--may be more complex than the company estimates. And they're concerned that initial implementations of DNA won't be well-integrated with Active Directory, the portion of NT 5.0 that represents Microsoft's first stab at enterprise directory management.

"Microsoft is being very aggressive in rolling out these large eterprise things, and they're going to be on training wheels for a while," said Steven Zeck, vice president and chief architect at Exodus Technologies Inc. in Bellevue, Wash.
