"The idea of singularity at the 'beginning' of Universal time seems to have come into acceptance by a fair portion of the intellectual community."

We know nothing at all about the universe. What we call the "universe" is simply what we are able to see with telescopes and imagine with equations. We are starting to know a little bit about our moon but that will take a lot of research. We have unwrapped an apple and the apple is in a box and the box is in a house on a beach on a planet...

But we cannot look beyond the box because of the relationship between the speed of light and the immensity of time.

Which is why questions of existence always default to "philosophy" rather than science. Although, (sad to say) a lot of people use religious myth as a substitute for philosophical thinking.

And because such mythology is not evidential we can look forward to the continuation of 30,000 Christian sects and a hundred thousand or so other sects--ALL superior and ALL ABSOLUTE! And we can all suck nectar out of flowers...
