They were different then. They were chartered by the monarch, and said charter could be revoked on a whim. We also had a similar system until well into the 1800s. Corporations were chartered by the state they resided in, and they could have their charter revoked for any reason at all. The idea they were an artificial person didn't exist at the time the Constitution was crafted.

So the Founders had no reason to fear that corporations could pervert the political process. Because corporations as we know them didn't exist.
