I think that civilization is also a product of some very hard labor. All the non-ferrous metals (except gold) required difficult mining before explosives and power tools. Many key improvements, like the Roman aqueducts, and the roads, required extensive physical labor. The transcontinental railroad was built with an aggressive human (and Irish) assault on the mountains and deserts, not a 'make' command in Unix...;-) Where the will and the physical strength was not there, progress did not occur. ***** Doing less manual labor has made me appreciate it much more.
