"To me, a move upward like this is simply more opportunity for shorting. But when I short, I like to think that I'm betting against the big boys."

You may be. A big short position accumulated in the 40-60 range is a legitimate candidate for covering. After all, the person who owns that position has made 60-70% of the money they could conceivably make with this position. It doesn't mean that the person covering is wrong or that you are wrong to be selling short to that former short.

There are very few people whose investment style calls for throwing good money after good money on the short side. For most people the decision is simply whether to cover or hold when a stock is falling.
