Capitalism could not work if it was based solely on competition Probably not but in practice in never is, and even in theory there it isn't. In fact capitalism to a great extent is based on cooperation (if only cooperation for profit, but it doesn't exclude other types.) People cooperate very easily on small scales, withing their family or circle of friends. Capitalism usually doesn't play much of a role within this cooperation. On a larger scale capitalism involves cooperation through competition. Parts of something as simple as a pencil come from all over the world, from groups of people that have no special concern for other people in the supply chain or for the end customer. They all work without a central plan or a strong cooperative spirit with everyone else involved but they all contribute to the end result. I'm not sure if that's competition as your using the term, perhaps "coordination" might substitute, if it doesn't fit your definition.
