The problem none of them want to confront is that most of the positive economic activity during the Bush years came from deficit spending and a credit bubble that almost wiped us all out.

Once the props were knocked away, it all came crashing down. And even while it was cooking, job creation and income inequality sucked compared to historical norms.

But now that they are on the outside, simple slogans will suffice to get them more seats in Congress and a chance to grind the country to a halt for a few years.

I've been trying to think of the right metaphor for where American politics stands. At first I considered a seesaw with the dominant weight going back and forth between the two ends. But that implies a stable central fulcrum, which is gone from our politics today.

The more appropriate image is a grossly overcrowded passenger ferry where the herd keeps running from port to starboard and back in a blind stampede, forcing the ship to weave wildly but make very little real forward progress.

Only everyone is too busy screaming at each other to notice.

We've already picked out a good movie to watch tomorrow night while the SOTU kibuki act plays out.
