36 Democrats, 16 Republicans and one independent just voted in the Senate *for* a statutory and bipartisan Deficit Reduction Commission like the military base closing comission that came after the Cold War ended.

The Senators achieved a clear MAJORITY in the Senate (53 to 46 for the commission, and would have had one more Senator's vote if he had been present), but that majority support for deficit reduction was NOT ENOUGH to meet the 'super majority' of 60 votes necessary to shut off filibustering.

Sen. Judd Gregg (R-N.H.), a cosponsor of the proposal, said its defeat was "yet another indication that Congress is more concerned with the next election than the next generation." Gregg is retiring from Congress at the end of the year.


Senate rejects creation of commission to trim federal deficit

Congress would have been barred from altering the panel's recommendations. The Congressional Budget Office reports the government is on course to double the national debt in five years.
