The rich pay a large and (until the recession) increasing portion of the federal government's revenue. In fact one of the reasons why federal revenue took such a hit with the recession is that so much of federal revenue comes from the rich now, and their income (a large chunk of which is profits from small businesses or from investments) is more variable than the income of the not-rich. In other words we have huge budget shortfalls partially because we rely so much on the rich and now you propose relying even more on them.

The whole Marie Antoinette point is ridiculous. No one is about to go cutting off heads, the situation is totally different; and in any case a large part of the populist anger out there is against arrogant politicians pushing bigger government. (Also even if there was a real incipient French revolution, it still would be irrelevant to the point. If angry mobs thought the rich where paying to little, it wouldn't change the fact that they are paying a lot.)
