It appears you found 2-3 kids out of 900 that may have some homeschooling..... The others are private high schools or prep schools. One kid did not do his work at home, in fact I'll bet he got permission to do it at Intel where that type of work is done and also is where he lives. I'm sure the number of finalists and semifinalists from New York has not escaped you... And I have yet to find a fair comparison of achievement results of Homeschool vs Public School. All info I have was from homeschool links... How do the Unschoolers do?
