Who's making record profits now?

"Where's the hiring?" I'd say uncertainty about future tax policy, health care policy, etc is a major impediment to hiring and business plans. Will the Bush tax cuts expire, effectively raising taxes? Will there be new energy or health care taxes? Nobody really knows.

How many unemployed would there be if GM and the other auto's failed

They have failed. Making it official wouldn't make much difference.

and the banks failed?

We don't know what would have or wouldn't have failed. We do know Fannie and Freddie failed though (and AIG) and they were recipients of TARP.

That stimulus money was better than a tax break...

Stimulus and TARP were different things. The stimulus didn't seem to have created many jobs.
