Thanks, Jerry, it's terrific to have someone with a technical grounding contribute to this thread. What's your background?
I disagree with the lemonade remark, though, since Brad is almost surely right to conclude that for social/political/cultural/ideological reasons a police-compatible system is incompatible with commercial acceptance. That does leave the interesting credit card problem, although most commercial uses we are envisioning are for bio-ID, not one to many searches.
The reluctance to change AFIS providers due to conversion costs helps explain how Printrak keeps "winning" renewal contracts, but yet failing to break out into a larger market. They would be trapped where they stand. Would this concern also apply to the less-demanding pattern recognition markets? Can we assume that if IDX gets its algorithm accepted first, it would be THE standard, or just one of who knows how many?
Brad, I am a lawyer but not one familiar with the mechanics of class action lawsuits or shareholder derivative suits. However, a motion to dismiss will not come from the judge, but from the defendant. Don't worry, they won't forget to make that motion (or a motion for summary judgment on liability, to the same effect). |
