Thanks, Ed, for your thoughtful reply. I get the impression you may have worked or been trained as an economist. If so, let me apologize if I offended you.

I tend to agree with your conclusions, starting with the comment that we have fundamental problems in the US economy, and not simply temporary glitches. R. Reich and others refer to this as "structural" problems.....not the least of which is that the divide between rich and poor has steadily grown for the last 25 years, and asset ownership has become increasingly concentrated in the hands of fewer and fewer people.

Shared sacrifice is, imo, the answer, but neither party seems to be going that direction, at least yet. In its simplest form, I'm using "shared sacrifice" to mean a government policy approach that combines raising taxes and cutting spending.

My guess is we're beyond the point that either pure supply-side approaches or Keynesian multipliers (with Govt. being the supplier of funds) will have significant and permanent effect.
