Sometimes discussing oil production becomes confusing because there are actually several different hydrocarbons that can be refined into liquid fuel for vehicles. They are:

1. crude oil
2. condensate
3. natural gas liquids
4. unconventional oil (oil shale, bio-fuels, etc)

Crude oil and condensate are the vast majority of hydrocarbons that are refined into liquid transportation fuel and adhere to the peaking phenomenon responsible for Peak Oil.

Natural Gas Liquids and Unconventional Oil are smaller additions to liquid fuel production.

When people discuss oil production, they can be referring to anyone of three things:

1. crude oil and condensate
2. crude oil, condensate and natural gas liquids
3. crude oil, condensate, natural gas liquids and unconventional oil

The production figures differ for each of these. This accounts for the sometimes contradictory oil production numbers.
