From the NYT Magazine article: Sylvester wore a thin blond beard and was missing his two front teeth. Brought up Catholic in the rural town of Doylestown, Pa., he found Islam in his early 20s while working as a jazz-fusion guitarist in Philadelphia. He had come to Mobile with his wife and six children, hoping to land a job at the Islamic school. By then, he was considered a prominent voice in the American Salafi movement.

Abu Khaliyl Jadd „Abdullah Sylvester (Tony Salvatore Sylvester), is an American who was born near Philadelphia Pennsylvania USA in 1966. He accepted Islam in the mid 1980?s, and after studying with various teachers and shaykhs, and founded and published books for the non-profit da‘wah organization Ad-Da‘wah to Laa ilaaha illallaah wa Muhammadur-Rasoolullaah in Philadelphia Pennsylvania USA. Then began working with al-Qur’an was-Sunnah Society of North America in the early 90?s with Muhammad Al-Jibaly who was its chairman at the time.

He authored, translated, or worked in editing on every publication published by the non-profit charitable organization al-Qur’an was-Sunnah Society of North America until 1999. During that period, he also held the position of chief content editor for HUDAA published out of New York. During that period he also worked on the popular da‘wah book; “A Brief Illustrated Guide to Understanding Islam.”

In August of 1999 he relocated to Riyadh, KSA, to begin work at the head office of Darussalam Publications. He resided there for two years, and aside from other publications produced during that period, his main responsibility was chief editor for the publication of the Tafsir Ibn Kathir (10 volumes) under the supervision of Shaykh Safi-ur-Rahman al-Mubarakpuri, may Allah have mercy with him. Abu Khaliyl?s duties on that project included the responsibility of abridging the Arabic text, removing all of the weak hadiths of the Tafsir, as well as correcting and editing the entire translation.

After the completion of the Tafsir, he returned to the United States and founded the non-profit charitable organization Dar al-Kitab wal Hikmah in Mobile, Alabama. He continues working full time for Darussalam Publications.

Abu Khaliyl is the author, editor, or translator of many books, booklets, and articles, some of which may be seen at the website for Dar al-Kitab wal Hikmah (www.dkh-islam.com), and he has many on-going projects that include both translations and compilations. His free English language da‘wah booklet “The Pillars of Faith in the Religion of Islam” has been printed many times, and is also translated in Spanish, French, and Italian.

His annotated Arabic text Fada’il an Nabi al-Madhkurati fil-Qur’an (Virtues of the Prophet Revealed in the Qur?an) taken from Dala’il an-Nubuwwah by al-Hafiz Abu Nu„aym al-Asbahani was translated and published by Ibn Mas‘ud Institute (UK). His translation and annotation of Al-Qawlus-Sadeed – Shaykh „Abdur-Rahman as-Sa„di?s commentary on Kitab at-Tawhid – was published by al-Hidaayah Publications (UK).

Abu Khaliyl was granted ijazah (permission) for the Six Books of Hadith (Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, Sunan Abu Dawud, Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi, Sunan An-Nasa’i and Sunan Ibn Majah) by Shaykh Safi-ur-Rahman after reading from them with him.

Abu Khaliyl has been teaching regular classes on-line for Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi and Sunan Abu Dawud, these classes have been on going more than six years. He also teaches Sunan an-Nasa’i monthly in Missouri. He has also taught his abridgement of Kitab as-Sunnah from Sunan Ibn Majah (dealing with sunnah, hadith, manhaj and creed) more than fifteen times, to many students in Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, more than one location in California, Washington state, Utah, Michigan, more than one location in Missouri, Greensboro North Carolina, more than one location in Connecticut, Toronto Canada, as well as teaching it in on-line lessons. He has also taught various lessons in creed, manhaj, fiqh and tafsir in Mobile Alabama.
