Whatever else you may think of Norman Mailer, he could hold his own with William F. Buckley, which was no small task. The intellectual level of political discourse on television has certainly degenerated from those days. Most everything today is focused on the process.

The guy that really deserved a beating - and still does - is Gore Vidal:
