Re: "In that unlikely (and that's putting it very mildly) hypothetical it would almost certainly happen. Imagine the panel suggested cutting defense in half, or a cutting social security benefits by 20%, or dropping a quarter of the Medicare or Medicaid rolls, or closing the national parks, or even something less extreme but still massively politically unpopular."

WHY?

(Why should I 'imagine that'?)

Cause that AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN. (Not *this year*, and THIS YEAR is when the bipartisan deficit reduction panel was supposed to be ordered to submit it's report/plan to Congress... and then the commission would be over with.)

HOWEVER... if we do *not* adequately address our chronic federal deficits in these near-to-mid-range-years... then EVENTUALLY (however long 'eventually' takes), all of those dire scenarios that you posited will become inevitable (either that or run-away inflation will be required to devalue the real expense of meeting our debt payments... and that other alternative road would collapse our economy and probably result in the same sort of draconian cuts anyway).
