The Oil Drum has raised the question whether in fact diesel cars are a "greener" alternative to hybrids.

According to the Union of Concerned Scientists there are 3 characteristics of diesel that affect its "greeness." First, diesel fuel contains 13% more energy than regular gasoline. Second, 13% more crude oil is necessary to produce a gallon of diesel than a gallon of regular gasoline. Third, diesel produces 13% more carbon dioxide than regular gasoline. So, it appears hybrids have an advantage.

On the other hand, diesel cars don't require Rare Earth Metals, which hybrids do. The Toyota Prius uses at least 24 pounds of Rare Earths. Multiply that by a theoretical million vehicles a year, and you start consuming a lot of Rare Earths.

As we can see, there is no silver bullet for oil depletion. It will require a multitude of measures to cope with the decline in oil production. As Mr. Pickens told Mr. Rose in 2006, we're going to need everything.
