Now I know this is going to hit SI like a golden goose laying an egg on the fan..but yes PLATINUM IS THOUGHT TO BE A VERY COMMON METAL. This was not previously expected before 1978. You should be able to find it many mafic rocks. In association with iron, copper and nickel, magnetite, with which it is frequently alloyed. I would say it is probable that it has gone down the tubes in many an iron mine.

Nobody talks about rhenium either but it is a good catalyst and very valuable and common.

It isn't a question of is the nickel platiniferous but how much Pt can you find in it? Gabbros in Kirkland lake are replete with it. Gabbros in Timmins and Shiningtree have all kinds. Trouble getting assays.
One zone in KL is known to go 1/10 of an ounce for many many tons. Nobody will do a deal. Had a property in TBay. 100 million tons estimated by Newmont of .08 opt Pt metals. No deal. Nobody would even make an offer. Call Tony Naldrett at U of T and ask him about Pt in the Timmins KL area. Teck denied it in the Kamiskotia gabbroic complex and Otukumpu says it runs up to point two. Inco denied it at Shiningtree and several field geologists say they saw it and Naldrett wrote books about it in the same township. (Fawcett, Natal, Knight)

VASILITE (Pd,Cu)16(S,Te)7
OSTERBOSCHITE (Pd,Cu)7Se3 UBEROITE Pt5Se4
TELARGPALITE (Pd,Ag)3Te KEITHCONNITE Pd20Te7
TELLUROPALLADINITE Pd9Te4 OULANKAITE 4SnTe2S2
SOPCHEITE Ag4Pd3Te4 TEMAGAMITE Pd3HgTe3 BOROVSKITE Pd3SbTe4

Some very nasty species of selenides and tellurides. I would say they
would be very hard to assay for let alone recover.

If it were as common as dirt I would pass it by.
