This weekend I had the funniest conversation with some of my German friends. We were talking about how many different nationalities have emigrated to the US. I said everyone except native Americans have come from some other country originally. So they said if you have an Italian or Korean surname then you can have both an Italian or Korean passport along with your American passport. I said "no" because you're not Italian or Korean but an American. But you have the surname of a Korean or an Italian and look like a Korean and an Italian. I said it doesn't matter....you're still an American. Intellectually of course, they understood what I was saying but they found the subject frustrating....coming from a country where 90+% of the people are German.....the idea that there can be so many different orignating nationalities in one country all calling themselves Americans bordered on the absurd. And the funny part......that's the least of our problems. <g>
