Joe -- Thanks from all of us for your kind words! But that note of self-deprecation is not warranted: we could really use an accountant around here. Or at least, I could. If you've read my postings at all, you certainly must have noticed that I too am looking for an education in this area, and find myself hampered by my lack of knowledge of the nitty-gritties. So please join in!

For starters, could you please elaborate on the following sentence: "Accounting has taught me to have a long look at the balance sheet, but with off-balance sheet items now the norm, this critical financial statement is not as reliable."

What exactly are these "off balance sheet items," and why/how have they taken over, as it were?
