There's no federal regulation of car insurance, and there's no possibility of buying car insurance from any state other than the one in which your car is registered.

Since we agree that there are no coherent policies on offer to begin our discussion, I'll just say this. If you tell me what specific policies you want to talk about, we can talk about them.

Tim thinks, from what I can gather, that allowing people to buy insurance across state lines means letting people in any state buy insurance that is offered in any other state. I guess the idea is that since insurance costs less in Wyoming than it does in New Jersey, we should let the people who live in New Jersey buy the Wyoming insurance. Or whatever.

You are talking about something quite different, I take it. But I'm not sure exactly what. Nationally offered insurance plans that may or may not be available in specific states if they don't meet the requirements of those states?

Do you see why I am confused?

One major problem I have with the Republican health insurance "plan" is that it appears to comprise only vague statements like "let people buy insurance across state lines," coupled with claims that more competition will result in lower prices. But as we see, when you begin to dig into the question of what that actually means, you run into difficulty.
