They are closely divided on his performance as president, but last weekend's NBC/Wall Street Journal poll shows that 52 percent still have a positive impression of him. Only 34 percent have a negative impression. But then there's this, from Rasmussen's Saturday poll, on three statements Obama made during his State of the Union Address: <<< The president in the speech declared that his administration has cut taxes for 95% of Americans...Most (53%) say it has not happened, and 26% are not sure. The president also asserted that “after two years of recession, the economy is growing again.” Just 35% of voters believe that statement is true... Obama claimed that steps taken by his team are responsible for putting two million people to work “who would otherwise be unemployed.” Just 27% of voters say that statement is true. Fifty-one percent (51%) say it's false. >>> In a previous poll, only 9 percent of voters expected Obama's spending freeze to have much effect. The numbers suggest that if Democrats follow the Plouffe playbook and run on Obama's economic achievements (i.e., the stimulus package), their cause is probably lost, barring a major turnaround in the coming months.
